WASHINGTON — The decision to play Saturday’s 4:05 p.m. contest between the Mets and the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park ultimately proved to be the wrong one. The game was suspended in the top of the third and an extra lengthy delay came a few minutes shy of four hours. The two teams will resume action Sunday as a split doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 12:35 and the second for 4:35. Fans who had tickets for the first game will only be able to use them for the continuation of the contest. Max Scherzer will pitch the second game but the Mets have not yet named a starter for the first game.Since the two teams will resume the game with seven innings to play, the 27th man will only be allowed for the second game.“We’ve got one, we just don’t know who it is yet,” said manager Buck Showalter. “We’ve got the 27th guy in Game 2 and we’re trying to sort through a lot.”The home team decides whether or not to start t...

Chicago Cubs right-hander Hayden Wesneski dropped his head and stared at the dirt mound. The Minnesota Twins had just clubbed their fourth home run of the game off Wesneski — the last Jorge Polanco’s 409-foot, two-run homer in the fifth — to build a seven-run lead. Each came from the bat of left-handed hitter who swatted Wesneski’s too many mistakes. The Cubs couldn’t overcome the home run barrage in an 11-1 blowout loss at Target Field.Tucker Barnhart’s RBI single in the seventh prevented the Cubs (19-20) from getting shut out the first time this season.“Trying to make pitches and sometimes whether that’s mechanical or concentration, what are those factors, we’ll look at and try to get a plan these next four days and get back to work,” manager David Ross said of Wesneski. “We haven’t had many clunkers like that early on (when) we’re out of the game.”Wesneski struggled to command his stuff around the ...

BANGKOK (AP) — Voters in Thailand were heading to the polls on Sunday in an election touted as a pivotal chance for change, eight years after incumbent Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha first came to power in a 2014 coup. He is now running against the daughter of the politician who is the military’s top nemesis. The opposition Pheu Thai Party, headed by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is widely predicted to win at least a healthy plurality of the seats in the 500-member lower House. But who heads the next government won’t by decided by Sunday’s vote alone. The prime minister will be selected in July in a joint session of the House and the 250-seat Senate. The winner must secure at least 376 votes and no party is likely to do that on its own.Pheu Thai won the most seats in the last election in 2019, but its archrival, the military-backed Palang Pracharath Party, succeeded in cobbling together a coalition with Prayuth as prime minister. It relied on unanimous support from the S...

Orioles top Pirates, 2-0, behind Tyler Wells’ dominance, solo homers from Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson

Fredi González was hoping for an easy game to manage Saturday.Filling in for skipper Brandon Hyde, who was at his daughter’s college graduation Saturday, González’s wish was that Tyler Wells would throw a complete game, and the bench coach would hand the team back over to Hyde with a fresh bullpen.Tyler Wells didn’t give González nine innings, but what he did provide was more than enough.Wells, the Orioles’ best starter so far this season, pitched the finest game of his career, twirling seven magnificent innings in Baltimore’s 2-0 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates. The right-hander allowed just one hit and two walks across seven innings, which tied his career-high set earlier this year. Wells struck out a career-high eight batters and got 18 swings and misses — two more than in any other start of his young career.Baltimore’s offense provided one run more than Wells and the bullpen needed.
