JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel struck targets in the Gaza Strip with stepped-up bombardment and artillery fire overnight into Saturday, knocking out communications and creating a near-blackout of information by largely cutting off the besieged enclave’s 2.3 million people from contact with the outside world. The Israeli military said it was expanding ground operations in the territory, signaling it was moving closer to an all-out invasion of Gaza, where it has vowed to crush the ruling Hamas militant group after its bloody incursion in southern Israel three weeks ago.Explosions from continuous airstrikes lit up the sky over Gaza City for hours after nightfall Friday. The Palestinian telecom provider, Paltel, said the bombardment caused “complete disruption” of internet, cellular and landline services. Acapulco residents are fending for themselves in absence of aid

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 20:39:08 GMT

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — In a city without water, electricity or gasoline, where desperate people have been allowed, even encouraged, to take essential goods from damaged stores since Hurricane Otis smashed Acapulco, state police officer Raúl Gallardo stood guard over a mountain of excess.Gallardo explained the distinction authorities have been making — in some cases — between what people can take and what would end up in his pile.People can take “what you can consume — water, tuna, mayonnaise, that you can take,” he said. What isn’t allowed is big-ticket items — “appliances, for example,” he said, swiveling to point at the refrigerators behind him. “What’s not within the basket of basic foodstuffs, you can’t take.”Despite government promises that aid was on the way in a big way, people did not wait.Acapulco’s desperate residents cleaned out the city’s largest stores in three days. It was not isolated to any particular neighborhood or carried out under cover of darkness, but wi...

WALNUT CREEK – Acalanes’ passing attack has sliced and diced secondaries all season, and entered Friday averaging over 300 air yards per game. But in the Dons’ 34-14 victory over previously unbeaten Las Lomas, one that put Acalanes in first place in the Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division standings, the Lafayette school didn’t need precision passing. It needed a sledgehammer to break down its Walnut Creek opponent, and found one in 190-pound linebacker-turned-running back Jack Giorgianni.“Our games have been blowouts, so we’ve never needed him that much until tonight,” Acalanes coach Floyd Burnsed said. “He showed how good he was tonight.”With the score tied at 14-14 entering the fourth quarter and starting RB Jack Miller out with injury, Giorgianni ran the ball five times for 60 yards on the Dons’ drive, and punctuated the sequence with an 18-yard run through the heart of the defense.By the time the senior made it into the end zone, he had broken ankles, tackles and a lead...
