Republican presidential hopeful wants to build a wall along the Canada-U.S. border

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:47:44 GMT

It was a well-worn Canadian punchline during the Trump years: someone should build a wall along the Canada-U.S. border. One of the former president’s would-be successors says he wants to do exactly that. During Wednesday’s Republican primary debate, a straight-faced Vivek Ramaswamy called it an example of skating to where the puck is going. It also reflects a popular talking point among some Capitol Hill Republicans who say they fear an increase in migrants entering the U.S. illegally from Canada. Ramaswamy’s campaign strategy has been to embrace and amplify Trump’s shock-and-awe tactics, which famously included plans for a U.S.-Mexico border wall. The debate, featuring just five of the Republican hopefuls, came in the face of fresh polling that suggests Trump himself remains the runaway favourite.

Analysts warn that Pakistan’s anti-migrant crackdown risks radicalizing deported Afghans

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The Pakistani government’s crackdown on undocumented migrants and mass deportations to Afghanistan risk radicalizing those who have been forced out of the country — often returning to deplorable conditions back home, analysts and experts said Thursday.More than 250,000 Afghans have left Pakistan in recent weeks as the government rounded up, arrested and kicked out foreign nationals without papers. The drive mostly affects Afghans who make up the majority of foreigners living in Pakistan, although authorities say that all who are in the country illegally are targeted. Thousands are crossing the border every day into Afghanistan with few or no belongings, enduring harsh conditions until they are relocated within a country they left to seek a better life. The mistreatment could lead to their radicalization by fueling hatred for Pakistan, said Zahid Hussain, an analyst of militancy and author of several books, including “Frontline Pakistan: The Struggle with Milita...

Witness list nearly 10 pages long for Kaitlin Armstrong trial

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The State continues calling witnesses Thursday for day six of Kaitlin Armstrong's murder trial. Police say she shot and killed pro cyclist Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson on May 11, 2022. State prosecutors have presented a timeline of GPS, DNA, video and electronic evidence they say pins the murder on Armstrong. Detective addresses Kaitlin Armstrong’s online searches in days, weeks after Wilson’s death While the Defense has not called any of their own witnesses yet, during opening statements attorneys highlighted the fact that no eye witnesses saw Armstrong in person at the east Austin apartment where Wilson was killed. On Wednesday, Det. Austin blocks plan to demolish Rainey Street bungalow as bar empties out

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:47:44 GMT

AUSTIN (Austin Business Journal) -- A plan to demolish one of Rainey Street’s last bungalow homes has been met with a wave of resistance by Austin City Hall, leaving a local bar caught in between. Now home to the closing Placeholder Tiki Bar, the owners of the approximately 1,100-square-foot, single-story building at 96 Rainey St. were blocked from demolishing the existing structure to redevelop the site. The Austin Historic Landmark Commission on Nov. 1 declined to vote on the owner's request to replace the old home, originally constructed in 1887, with a two-story, flat-roofed brick building. The commission’s inaction effectively brings the property owner’s plans back to the drawing board. A 75-day consideration period for the request comes to a close in mid-November. The plan has been in place for about four years, presumably to make way for a new entertainment business on-site.Read the full story at Austin Business Journal.

Small Bites: The High Hat, a jazzy new Southwest-inspired St. Paul breakfast spot, hits all the right notes

Before The High Hat opened this summer, I stopped by to chat with owner Michael Noyes.Albums by Taylor Swift and Thelonious Monk rest near the turntable at The High Hat, a new Cathedral Hill restaurant. (Jared Kaufman / Pioneer Press)I was first struck by the stunning transformation he made to the former Bon Vie Bistro and A Piece of Cake location in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill. The physical space was his starting point, he told me, and the food menu followed. He’s worked in St. Paul restaurants for years as a “front-of-house guy” and is also a drummer. The High Hat is his first solo project.I was excited to return for a meal once the restaurant had gotten on its feet — and Noyes nailed it. The cafe was bustling (but not overly noisy!) on a weekend morning earlier this fall, and the vibrant and jazzy atmosphere was truly delightful.Oh, and the food was great, too.My dining partner and I started with drinks. The staff, many of whom are Taylor Swift fans, created the coffee menu, a...
