HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) — A Detroit-area community has banned LGBTQ+ flags from publicly owned poles after a tense hourslong meeting that raised questions about discrimination, religion and the city’s reputation for welcoming newcomers. In protest, a woman speaking during the public comment portion of the Hamtramck City Council meeting kissed a woman standing next to her Tuesday night.“You guys are welcome,” council member Nayeem Choudhury said. “(But) why do you have to have the flag shown on government property to be represented? You’re already represented. We already know who you are.”Some members of the all-Muslim council said the Pride flag clashes with the beliefs of some members of their faith. Businesses and residents aren’t prohibited from displaying a Pride flag on their own property.“We want to respect the religious rights of our citizens,” Choudhury said.Hamtramck, population 27,000, is an enclave surrounded by Detroit. ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that NATO should not bet on his country approving Sweden’s application to join the Western military alliance before a July summit because the Nordic nation has not fully addressed his security concerns. Sweden and Finland applied for membership together following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year. Finland became NATO’s 31st member in April after the Turkish parliament ratified its request, but Turkey has held off approving Sweden’s bid.NATO wants to bring Sweden into the fold by the time the leaders of member nations meet for a summit in Lithuania’s capital on July 11-12. Speaking to journalists on his way back from a state visit to Azerbaijan on Tuesday, Erdogan said Turkey’s attitude to the accession was not “positive.”Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency and other media reported Erdogan’s comments as senior officials from NATO, Sweden, Finland and Turkey met in Ankara on Wednesday. CHICAGO — It was one of the best nights for one of the longest-tenured Cubs at a misty Wrigley Field on Tuesday night. But the ending to the game wasn't what Ian Happ or the team might have hoped for despite the great night from the outfielder at the plate. For the first time since May, Ian Happ hit a homer and drove in a season-high four RBI in an 11-3 Cubs win over the Pirates to start a three-game series. It ended his 118-at-bat homerless streak that dated back to May 5 as his three-run shot in the first inning got the Cubs off on the right foot. It had been the longest stretch for Happ without a home run since he made his major league debut in 2017. He'd drive in four runs on the evening, which is a season-high and the fourth time this year he's driven in at least three runs in a game. Happ also scored three runs on the evening, but it was on his last one in the seventh inning that his night came to an early end.Rounding third and coming into score on a Yan Gomes single, Happ's ...Chicago police searching for 'high-risk' missing teen last seen at her home

(The Hill) -- Students in grades five through 12 in the U.S. give their schools a B- at the close of the 2022-2023 academic year, according to a new Gallup and Walton Family Foundation-State of American Youth Survey. While there is a good amount of positivity towards schools, with 22 percent of students giving an “A” grade and 44 percent giving a “B,” 24 percent of students labeled their school a “C” while 10 percent gave it a “D” or “F.”The students were particularly upset with how schools prepared them for the future and engaged with their learning. On average, students gave their schools a “C+” for making them excited to learn, for adapting to a style of learning that suits them best and for informing them of different career paths. “At a crucial moment in defining future pathways, high school students are less excited about learning and feel less prepared for the future than middle school students,” the report reads. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A group of neighbors in the Little Walnut Creek area of north Austin said they are frustrated with the lack of communication from the city and are strongly considering a lawsuit after their homes were damaged in a flooding event. "It's easy to come here and see the damages and walk away and live your own life as the city. But we're stuck here," Dustin Grant, one of the homeowners, said. "We live this every day." Grant said his home received about $150,000 of damage. His backyard fence was pushed down by rushing flood waters, his floor had to be ripped up after three inches of water got into the house, and he is now using his camping gear as a makeshift kitchen until his house is fixed. He is one of the 60 homes that were damaged during an April 20 storm. HOUSTON (KXAN) -- The Houston Police Department confirmed Tuesday that one of its K-9 dogs, Aron, passed away due to heat exhaustion.Aron was a four-year-old K-9 dog who had worked with the department for one-and-a-half years. The handler left Aron in a running and air-conditioned patrol vehicle, which HPD said was a "necessary and common practice when the K-9 partner is not actively engaged in police work."Aron's police handler returned to the patrol vehicle and found the engine had shut off. Aron was taken to an emergency veterinarian clinic, where the dog ultimately died of heat exhaustion. HPD said K-9 vehicles are designed to notify the handler, sound horns and active cooling fans while rolling down the windows if the vehicle's engine turns off. The department confirmed this didn't happen in this incident, and police officials are investigating what went wrong.
